What Is the HTA?

The Home Technology Association (HTA) was formed to empower homeowners with a reliable method to evaluate a company’s competence, customer service, and reputation in the industry. With rigorous standards, a board of HTA members decides which technology installation firms deserve certification. The association was created because previously, there was no qualification for a business to call themselves a ‘home technology professional,’ leading to subpar technology experiences. Just like Michelin stars tell you a restaurant is high-quality, an HTA-certified firm is one you can trust.

What are the Qualifications?

HTA Certification is based on three pillars: technical competency, aftercare service, and reputation. A qualified company’s ownership and management team must have at least three years of successful business performance, and a demonstrated history of technical skill and high-quality aftercare service. The company cannot have tax liens, should not have filed for bankruptcy in the past five years, and must perform background checks on all new employees. The business must also receive endorsements from at least three manufacturers, local industry professionals, and designers/builders. When you work with an HTA company, you can rest assured they have met these criteria.

What Are the HTA Categories?

HTA-certified companies are divided into three categories: foundation, luxury, and estate. The classifications are designed to help customers find the right fit based on budget, complexity, and scale. A ‘foundation’ firm typically specializes in homes of 5,000 square feet and under; homes with simpler technology installations; projects that take days or weeks to complete; and budgets of $50,000 or less. A ‘luxury’ company will work with homes between 5,000 and 10,000 square feet; homes with more advanced technology desires; high-end interior design and architecture; and projects in the $50,000 to $250,000 range. An ‘estate’ firm likely works in 10,000 square foot homes and up, often with multiple structures; homes with domestic staff; homeowners with multiple residences; projects that take months or years to complete; and projects of $250,000 and up.

If you see that a company is HTA-certified, know that they are qualified to master your home technology project and provide stellar maintenance services.
