A Content Guide for Charlotte Home Theaters

Have you cut your cable cord yet? While many families still pay for a monthly cable service, many are opting out for video streaming subscription services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu and more. Each one has its own unique content and different options for streaming quality. So how do you choose which video streaming device you use to play all the content you love on your home theater system? Read this guide to get a sense of what each one has to offer. We have Kaleidescape, Roku and VUDU for you to choose from.

 1. Kaleidescape

Kaleidescape is a movie server that houses 4K and HD content for you to rent or purchase. However, instead of streaming the movie (which involves playing content over an Internet connection) you download it first and then play it. Streaming content will never be as good as playing a digital file or disc because it relies on the stability of the Internet connection to perform well, and the truth is that isn’t always up to par. Plus, when you play content locally, your TV or projector already has all of the information it needs to produce the picture so there’s no reason why it shouldn’t show you everything it should. Another benefit of using Kaleidescape is that you can keep your movie collection on a digital platform instead of using up precious space in your house. That way you can browse through you most beloved films as well as new ones all on the same platform.

2. Roku

Only Roku offers streaming players and TVs that work with the following paid or free channels: Netflix, Amazon Video, Hulu, PBS, Pandora, Google Play, and Sling Television. You can use the free video streaming options or the ones you pay for, but it’s all in one location for you to browse. Imagine you want to watch the movie Interstellar for example. Roku will show you where it’s available and for how much. Search for it and it will reveal that Fandango Now has it for purchase for 13.99, for rent on Google Play for 12.99, for rent on CinemaNow for 3.99 and to stream on Hulu for free. If you have Hulu, you’d probably pick the free option, or if you decide you want to own the movie you could add it to your digital library.

3. VUDU

VUDU does not have a monthly subscription fee like Netflix does and operates on a pay-per-view basis. You can either rent movies or purchase them to store in a digital library. You can also convert your DVDs and Blu-rays into digital copies through this service. Another added benefit is that many of the videos on sale at Walmart come with a digital download code so you can add them to your VUDU library. The same goes for any Disney movie you buy. This is convenient when you are traveling and can’t bring your discs and players with you. You can access all your digital movies online and play them on a tablet or laptop.
